Vernon City Cemetery
Vernon, Lamar County, Alabama
Originally known as the Vernon Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery
No. 93 on the 2002 Cemetery Map of Lamar County

Located on Route 17 in Vernon, 0.2 mi. south of County Road 9.
Transcribed by Paul Hays, Kawatha “Kay” Koonce, & James W. “Jim” Dierking, August 2004. Although incomplete, additional burial information has been obtained from obituaries through mid-December 2005.
Single spacing of names denotes multiple graves with one headstone, or family plots. Annotations (in parentheses) were added by Paul Hays, Kawatha “Kay” Koonce, Jean Smith Carr, Janie Spencer, Allison M. Saxman, Jim Newell, Donna Sanders Thompson, Edna Boman Sanders, and Rayburn Metcalfe, and reflect their best efforts to identify, based on their own personal knowledge and research, the parents and/or spouses of the people buried there.
Additional information was obtained from an unpublished list prepared by Maggie Lee Davis Hayes, the noted local historian who is herself buried in this cemetery. Her list, compiled about 1962, contains a number of minor differences from this record as to names and dates. It also includes several graves that were not identifiable in 2004. Sarah Gann Guin Loftis identified other “lost” graves from personal knowledge.
The graves recorded by Mrs. Hayes or Mrs. Loftis that were no longer evident in 2004 are listed alphabetically at the end of this transcription. The variations between Mrs. Hayes’ data and that recorded during this survey are displayed in notes that begin “(MLH: ….),” following the inscriptions and preceding the transcribers’ annotations.

A small section of graves lies just outside a gate near the southwest corner of the cemetery. Although technically not a part of this cemetery, the graves there are included with this list, following the last row and before the “lost” graves recorded by Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Loftis.

Rows are listed from east to west, beginning at the highway; within each row, graves are listed from north to south.
